# Mandate For Palestine

The **Mandate for Palestine** was a [League of Nations mandate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/League_of_Nations_mandate "League of Nations mandate") for [British](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Empire "British Empire") administration of the territories of [Palestine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandatory_Palestine "Mandatory Palestine") and [Transjordan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emirate_of_Transjordan "Emirate of Transjordan") – which had been [part of](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Syria "Ottoman Syria") the [Ottoman Empire](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Empire "Ottoman Empire") for four centuries – following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in [World War I](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I "World War I"). Under the mandate, Britain assumed obligations both to the inhabitants of Palestine and to the establishment of a Jewish national home, as set out in the British government's 1917 Balfour Declaration.[<span class="editor-theme-superscript">\[2\]</span>](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandate_for_Palestine#cite_note-:1-6) The mandate was assigned to Britain by the [San Remo conference](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Remo_conference "San Remo conference") in April 1920, after France's concession in the [1918 Clemenceau–Lloyd George Agreement](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_Clemenceau%E2%80%93Lloyd_George_Agreement_(Middle_East) "1918 Clemenceau–Lloyd George Agreement (Middle East)") of the previously agreed "international administration" of Palestine under the [Sykes–Picot Agreement](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sykes%E2%80%93Picot_Agreement "Sykes–Picot Agreement"). Transjordan was added to the mandate after [the Arab Kingdom in Damascus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_Kingdom_of_Syria "Arab Kingdom of Syria") was toppled by the French in the [Franco-Syrian War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franco-Syrian_War "Franco-Syrian War"). Civil administration began in Palestine and Transjordan in July 1920 and April 1921, respectively, and the mandate was in force from 29 September 1923 to 15 May 1948 and to 25 May 1946 respectively.

The mandate document was based on Article 22 of the [Covenant of the League of Nations](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covenant_of_the_League_of_Nations "Covenant of the League of Nations") of 28 June 1919 and the [Supreme Council of the Principal Allied Powers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allies_of_World_War_I "Allies of World War I")' San Remo Resolution of 25 April 1920. The mandatory power's objective was to administer the territories as a trust until they were "able to stand alone", taking into account the wishes and interests of their inhabitants. However, it was not itself a sovereign authority over the territory, and could not unilaterally transfer sovereignty to itself or independently establish territorial title.[<span class="editor-theme-superscript">\[3\]</span>](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandate_for_Palestine#cite_note-7) The border between Palestine and Transjordan was agreed in the final mandate document, and the approximate northern border with the French [Mandate for Syria and the Lebanon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandate_for_Syria_and_the_Lebanon "Mandate for Syria and the Lebanon") was agreed in the [Paulet–Newcombe Agreement](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paulet%E2%80%93Newcombe_Agreement "Paulet–Newcombe Agreement") of 23 December 1920.
