# Honorable Rachel Corrie

**Rachel Aliene Corrie** (April 10, 1979 – March 16, 2003) was an American [nonviolence](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonviolence "Nonviolence") activist and [diarist](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diarist "Diarist").[<span class="cite-bracket">\[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">\]</span>](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rachel_Corrie#cite_note-Haaretz_American_peace_activist-1)[<span class="cite-bracket">\[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">\]</span>](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rachel_Corrie#cite_note-BBC_profile-2) She was a member of the pro-Palestinian [International Solidarity Movement](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Solidarity_Movement "International Solidarity Movement") (ISM),[<span class="cite-bracket">\[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">\]</span>](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rachel_Corrie#cite_note-3) and was active throughout the [Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli-occupied_territories "Israeli-occupied territories"). In 2003, she was in [Rafah](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafah "Rafah"), a city in the [Gaza Strip](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_Strip "Gaza Strip") then under [Israeli occupation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_occupation_of_the_Gaza_Strip "Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip"), where the [demolishment of Palestinian houses](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_demolition_of_Palestinian_property "Israeli demolition of Palestinian property") by Israeli forces was taking place at the height of the [Second Intifada](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Intifada "Second Intifada"). While protesting the demolitions as they were being carried out, she was **murdered** by an Israeli [armored bulldozer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IDF_Caterpillar_D9 "IDF Caterpillar D9") that crushed her.

<p class="callout info">UPDATE: 2003 – [American activist Rachel Corrie ](https://rachelcorriefoundation.org/blog/2010/03/14/autopsy-doctor-admits-to-violating-court-order-in-rachel-corrie-autopsy)was murdered by an Israeli bulldozer. Yehuda Hiss performed Rachel’s autopsy and testified in an Israeli court in 2010 that he kept tissue and organs from her body. Rachel’s family has never gotten the tissues back for burial. It is of note that an autopsy had already been performed and cause of death determined by Palestinian Dr Ahmed Abu Nikera. **Source**: [https://mondoweiss.net/2025/02/a-brief-history-of-israels-theft-and-trafficking-of-palestinian-organs/](https://mondoweiss.net/2025/02/a-brief-history-of-israels-theft-and-trafficking-of-palestinian-organs/) </p>

<p class="callout danger">**killed**: replaced by **murdered**, these are, not so subtle de-sanitization, of witness accounts per Western publishers and journalists. She was murdered by an Israeli armored-bulldozer driver. </p>

Other peace activists tend to Rachel after she was fatally injured by the driver of the Israeli bulldozer (in background). This photo was taken seconds after the bulldozer driver dragged his blade over her for the second time while reversing back over her body. He lifted the blade as seen in the photo only after he had dragged it back over Rachel’s body. Her head was wrapped to maintain the skull structural integrity, so surely her entire body was crushed, head included. This was not an accident.

Q: Why was Ms. Corrie's body wrapped around with a US flag by the Arab Palestinian?

##### Fair Use Doctrine

**Fair use** is a [doctrine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_doctrine "Legal doctrine") in [United States](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States "United States") law that permits limited use of [copyrighted](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright "Copyright") material without having to first acquire permission from the copyright holder. Fair use is one of the limitations to copyright intended to balance the interests of copyright holders with the public interest in the wider distribution and use of creative works by allowing a defense to [copyright infringement](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_infringement "Copyright infringement") claims for certain limited uses that might otherwise be considered infringement.[<span class="cite-bracket">\[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">\]</span>](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use#cite_note-1) The U.S. "fair use doctrine" is generally broader than the "[fair dealing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_dealing "Fair dealing")" rights known in most countries that inherited English [common law](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_law "Common law"). The fair use right is a general exception that applies to all different kinds of uses with all types of works. In the U.S., fair use right/exception is based on a flexible proportionality test that examines the purpose of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount used, and the impact on the market of the original work.[<span class="cite-bracket">\[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">\]</span>](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use#cite_note-2)

The doctrine of "fair use" originated as a judicially created [common law](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_law "Common law") during the 18th and 19th centuries as a way of preventing copyright law from being too rigidly applied and "stifling the very creativity which \[copyright\] law is designed to foster."[<span class="cite-bracket">\[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">\]</span>](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use#cite_note-Gyles-3)[<span class="cite-bracket">\[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">\]</span>](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use#cite_note-4) Though originally a common law doctrine, it was enshrined in [statutory law](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statutory_law "Statutory law") when the U.S. Congress passed the [Copyright Act of 1976](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_Act_of_1976 "Copyright Act of 1976"). The [U.S. Supreme Court](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Supreme_Court "U.S. Supreme Court") has issued several major decisions clarifying and reaffirming the fair use doctrine since the 1980s,[<span class="cite-bracket">\[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">\]</span>](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use#cite_note-5) the most recent being in the 2023 decision *[Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. v. Goldsmith](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Warhol_Foundation_for_the_Visual_Arts,_Inc._v._Goldsmith "Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. v. Goldsmith").*
